the girl behind the shop - "JaLaRu"

I am super excited about a new feature on my blog called "The Girl Behind the Shop"! Every other week, I will focus on one etsy shop that I love. I will be interviewing the shop owner and then sharing their interview here with pictures of the shop owner, their studio space, and some of my favorite things up for sale in their shop.

Brenda

Today, I will be highlighting the shop "JaLaRu". I've gotten to know Brenda, the shop owner, through blogging, as well as through my etsy shop. She is so sweet! And I love her blog - she always features her recent finds at thrift stores (which y'all know I love!). And she is so creative and talented at sewing! Her creations are just beautiful! In fact, I recently won a giveaway of one of her bags. I love it so much!

So, without further ado...

Here's the interview with Brenda of JaLaRu!

1. How did you come up with your shop name?

Pretty simple really. I have 3 wonderful grandchildren, Jakob, Layla and Ruby. Just wanted to recognize their names and the love I have for them. The picture on my etsy shop is my Grandmother at 100 years old.

Brenda's studio space
(she's so organized!!)
And look at all her fabric all sorted by color! I'm so jealous! :)

2. How long have you been making things with your hands? How did it all begin?

I guess it really started when I was very young. My grandmother would embroider and quilt and I would be right there beside her and learning. Embroidery was always my favorite thing to do. I would buy little kits that would include all the thread and do crewel work. I was also learning from my Mother who is a great seamstress. She really didn't want me to use her machine, but she taught me how to make doll clothes by hand when I was about 7 years old. When I was 14 and a freshman in high school I took home economics. That's when the sewing machine came into play. I passed those classes with flying colors. Then my Mom was happy to let me use her machine.

(this is the amazing bag that i won from her shop!)
i love it so much!!

3. What kind of things do you enjoy making the most?

I love to make dresses and skirts for my grandkids, then purses and bags. Quilts are fun and I love them, but they are last on my list of things I love to sew.

4. What is most fulfilling to you about creating things?

My little ones love to wear the clothes I make. That makes me happy when they want to show them off. I feel happy and thankful I'm lucky enough to stay and home and do what I enjoy.

5. How do you connect with God while you create? What kinds of things does the Lord show you while you create?

After my sister died last year it was really hard to create. I knew God wanted me to be happy and sewing helped me keep my mind and hands busy and create for others. God has really helped me concentrate on sewing and making gifts for others.

Brenda has lots of other adorable bags, girl's dresses, vintage aprons, and handmade goodies in her shop. And she has graciously offered to give a 20% off discount to all my blog readers! Just use the coupon code "EAGERHANDS" at checkout to receive your discount. (Sale ends one week from today.)

Thanks, Brenda, for sharing with all of us a little bit about yourself and your creative process!
